Woodlawn Museum holds a number of special events throughout the year! Often sponsored by local businesses, these events offer the community an opportunity to come together to have fun, learn, and interact with one another. Here is a calendar of this year's events.   • Mondays and Fridays, June 1st, 12th, 15th, 26th, 29th, 6:30-9:30 p.m. - Chair Canning Workshop with Al Jenkins
    Participants will need to bring a chair with holes drilled around the perimeter of the seat to the first class. They will be taught to measure how much cane they need for their project. The cane will be ordered and available to start work on the 12th. Cost: $60 for members $75 for non-members, material not included. Depending on your project, the cane will run between $30 and $40 for 1 to 2 chairs. As space is limited, pre-registration is required by calling 667-8671.

  • Saturday, June 13th, 9 a.m. - 12 noon - Marbling on Paper with art educator and art therapist Shira Singer.
    Marbling is an ancient art form with historic roots in Japan and Turkey. Pigments are floated on a thickened medium and designs are created through use of a stylus and combs. The pattern is then transferred to paper or cloth that is laid upon the liquid's surface, producing results that are often surprising and magical. Participants will learn the process of marbling on paper, using water based materials, as well as what's needed to do the process at home. Wear old clothes and bring an apron or paint shirt.   • Saturday, June 27th, 10:00-11:30 a.m. - Square Foot Gardening
    Square Foot Gardening can decrease the time, cost and effort you devote to your garden while increasing yield! If this sounds too good to be true, come join Jim Flye and Scott Nurse, two experienced Master Gardener Volunteers who, through personal experience, are convinced that this technique really works. Part of the workshop will be held in the Woodlawn Community Garden where one of four demonstration beds will be set up for square gardening. This workshop is a must for all gardeners who want to conserve resources without sacrificing the quantity and quality of their produce.   • Tuesday, July 7th, 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. - Make Your Own Paper with Beth Herrick.
    Participants will learn how to make paper that can be used for the Lampshade Workshop on July 14th. As space is limited, pre-registration is required. Cost: $45 for members, $55 for non-members. As pace is limited, pre-registration is required. Bring a bag lunch.

  • Wednesday, July 8th, 3 p.m. - Afternoon High Tea

  • Saturday, July 11th, 9 a.m. - 12 noon - Clapboarding with Nelson Emerton.
    Learn the proper way to clapboard your house. Cost: $25 for members, $35 for non-members. As space is limited, pre-registration is required.

  • Tuesday, July 14th, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. - Paper Lampshade Workshop with Sue Noddin.
    This is a follow-up to the Paper Workshop. Use the paper you made to make a beautiful hexagon lampshade. As pace is limited, pre-registration is required. Cost: $55 for members, $65 for non-members. As pace is limited, pre-registration is required. Bring a bag lunch.

  • Friday, July 17th, 10-11:30 a.m. - Water Wise Gardening
    Tired of spending precious time and energy watering your garden? Master Gardener Volunteers Jennifer Crain and Kay Wilkins will show you how to keep your lawn and garden watered this summer and save you time and money in the process. They will discuss mulching methods that lock in precious moisture, helpful tips on how best to gauge the timing and duration of hand watering, rain barrels, drip irrigation and more. Kay Wilkins will demonstrate how easy it is to assemble a drip irrigation system that can be used by any home gardener.   • Saturday, July 18th, 9 a.m. - 12 noon - Wooden Window Restoration Workshop with Todd Devenish from Wooden Window Restoration, Co.
    Learn easy maintenance and restoration techniques for the windows in your old home. Participants can bring one window from home if they want. Cost: $25 for members, $35 for non-members. As space is limited, pre-registration is required by calling 667-8671.

  • Monday, July 20th, 10 a.m. - 12 noon - Wet Felting Wool Paintings for kids with Melissa Mattes
    Using the traditional wet felting method, come explore this ancient art of turning fuzzy wool into a work of art. This fun hands-on workshop is for children age 7 and up. Cost: $25 for members, $35 for non-members. As space is limited, pre-registration is required by calling 667-8671.

  • Tuesday, July 21st, 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. - Wet Felting and Pre-felting Wool Paintings for adults and Children Age 15 and up with Melissa Mattes
    In addition to learning the technique of wet felting, participants will learn how to pre-felt wool, layering wool and felting solid colors, to cut and use to construct their wool felt paintings with additional layered wool roving. Cost: $50 for members, $60 for non-members. As space is limited, pre-registration is required by calling 667-8671.

  • Thursday, July 30th, 4 p.m. - Reception and Lecture by Earle Shettleworth , Director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission.

  • Monday - Thursday, August 3rd-6th and August 17th-20th, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. - Summer Enrichment Program for Kids.
    Come and have fun at Woodlawn this summer! Walk the trails, play croquet and townball, do art projects incorporating nature and history, and much more. This program is designed for kids entering 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade next Fall. Cost per week per child: $150 for members, $175 for non-members.   • Saturday, August 8th, 11:00-12:30 a.m. - Tasty & Fresh: Edible Flower Recipes
    Try something new. Come to this unique workshop with Master Gardener Volunteers Karen Abbott and Jennifer Crain. Learn how a variety of edible flowers from your garden can add exotic color and flavor to your cooking. The possibilities for using these flowers in your dishes are endless - from tasty and colorful salads to fried squash blossoms stuffed with cheese! They will share a variety of easy to prepare recipes, hints on ways to use your garden flowers in traditional dishes, and demonstrate easy-to-prepare snacks that will tickle your taste buds and spark your imagination!   • Saturday, August 22th, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. - Soil Management for Gardeners
    Successful gardening begins with properly amended soil. You might be surprised to know that some soils are best left alone, and that sometimes "less is more". Bruce Hoskins of the University of Maine soil testing lab in Orono will be giving a talk on how to obtain optimum soil for your garden. (Soil sampling kits will be available).   • Saturday, August 25th, 9 a.m. - 12 noon - Tree Identification Workshop with forester Jim Ecker, Maine Forest Service.
    Following a powerpoint presentation, forester Jim Ecker will take you along Woodlawn's trails to teach you how to identify trees using the "Summer Key". Cost: your donation to help Woodlawn develop more programs is greatly appreciated. In case of inclement weather, the workshop will be on Saturday, September 5th, same time.

  • Wednesday, August 26th, 3 p.m. - Afternoon High Tea

  • Thursday, September 10th, 7-8 p.m. - Lecture by Phid Lawless co-founder of Lunaform

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, September 17th, 22th, October 1st, and 6th, 6:30-9:30 p.m - Rug Hooking Beginner Class with Al Jenkins.
    This 12-hour hands-on beginner class will teach you the wonderful art of rug hooking using a 8 X 13 inch mat. Participants will learn various techniques as they hook a saltbox house with an apple tree and a short fence with sky and grass background surrounded by an irregular border. Cost: $125 for members/$140* for non-members includes a simple frame, hook, pre cut wool, scissors and binder tape. Participants are asked to supply a spool of button or carpet thread and a heavy needle to bind the mat. (*$15 can be applied towards your membership if purchased on or before the workshop). As space is limited and sufficient kits ordered, pre-registration is required by calling Woodlawn at 667-8671 or emailing events@woodlawnmuseum.org by September 11th.

  • Friday, September 18th, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. - Floor Cloth Art with Sarah Brandon
    Come learn the technique for this wonderful decorative art popular in the 18th century. Participants will create a 2' X 3' floor cloth made of durable canvas. Cost: $55 for members, $65 for non-members. As space is limited, pre-registration is required by calling 667-8671. Bring a bag lunch.
